Lunar New Year with LA Philharmonic
Happy Lunar New Year everyone! This is the 18th year that I have celebrated the Lunar New Year in the States, and the holiday is definitely getting more popular and attention each year. This year, I have a whole entire week long Lunar New Year festival activities planned, which include a 3 day straight feast and the most anticipated Los Angeles Philharmonic’s performance - East meets West by Taiwanese-Australian violinist Ray Chen and conductor Elim Chan (on 2/6 and 2/7).
If you haven’t heard of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, you have definitely heard/seen the Disney Concert Hall by architect Frank Gehry before. It is the performance home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and a visit to the hall is highly recommended. Disney Concert Hall offers what's been called the best concert hall acoustics in the nation, maybe the world. The LA Philharmonic offers a rich combination of old and new music, along with the world's best conductors, including Gustavo Dudamel. The hall’s distinctive sweeping silver façade captures your eye amongst all the other downtown buildings. Around the corner, it also houses a smaller venue, Redcat, for experimental music and theater, and both a pre-concert cafe and a fine dining restaurant.
I got lucky to get a private tour and sneak peak of the auditorium, the hardwood-paneled main auditorium has a seating capacity of 2,265. It’s definitely a piece of art inside and out. The garden which is open to the public is also a highlight of the hall, if you come here on the weekends, you will have to wait in the line to capture a picture. It’s like an oasis in the hustle and bustle of the city, no wonder it’s the most picturesque spot in the hall!
If you’re looking for Lunar New Year activities to do for the next few days, the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s performance East meets West is definitely worth seeing. In celebration of the Lunar New Year, there will be complimentary drinks and traditional Chinese art practice in BP Hall prior to the concert. Don’t forget to use code “SPRING20” to get your ticket for only $20 (Here)! I’ll see you guys there on Thursday, 2/7!
